Today, July 9, the contract for refurbishing the Vidraru Hydropower Plant in Argeș County was signed, and the tender was completed after six attempts over a year.

The Vidraru Hydropower Plant, with a capacity of 220 MW, significantly contributes to Romania’s national grid, generating around 400 GWh annually. The refurbishment will further enhance green energy production capacity and positively impact the national energy system.

The Vidraru Dam and the entire hydroelectric ensemble are true engineering masterpieces. They were built between 1960 and 1966 and began operations on December 9, 1966.

The contract, valued at €188,382,020.89 (approximately USD 207,220,223), was awarded to the consortium formed by Electromontaj, Koncar – Engineering Co. Ltd. (Croatia), and Butan Grup. This marks a crucial step in modernizing Romania’s energy infrastructure.

Károly Borbély, CEO of Hidroelectrica, stated: “Signing this contract is a crucial step towards modernizing Romania’s hydroelectric infrastructure. The refurbishment of Vidraru will increase renewable energy production and positively impact the stability of the national energy grid. We trust that the consortium led by Electromontaj and the project team at #Hidroelectrica will deliver remarkable results.”

Marcel Ciolacu, Prime Minister of Romania, conveyed: “I feel immense pride in our past and complete confidence in our future. Today’s investment will allow us to modernize this masterpiece of Romanian engineering, enabling us to obtain green energy even more efficiently in the long term.”

Sebastian Burduja, Minister of Energy, added: “The refurbishment of the Vidraru plant will boost renewable energy production capacity and positively impact the entire national energy system. Most importantly, this investment benefits all citizens and businesses in Romania by providing secure, reasonably priced, and greener energy.”

Congratulations to the Hidroelectrica team for their hard work! Borbely Karoly, Bogdan Badea, Daniela Iordanescu, Marius Valcescu, Silvia Sologiuc, and many others.
