Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) has signed a contract with RoPower Nuclear for Phase 2 front-end engineering and design (FEED) work at the small modular reactor (SMR) facility in Doicesti, Romania. Utilizing NuScale Power’s cutting-edge SMR technology, this project is a significant milestone in Romania’s clean energy journey.
Phase 1 Completion was achieved in Q4 2023, and phase 2 Kickoff will be in Q3 2024. The six-reactor SMR plant will produce up to 462 MW of carbon-free power. This will be the first SMR in Europe with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval.
The contract was signed during the P-TECC summit in Bucharest on July 24, attended by Romanian Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja and U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. This underscores strong bilateral cooperation and the pivotal role of SMR technology in enhancing energy security.
Pierre Bechelany, President of Fluor’s LNG & Power business, stated, “This facility will be the first of its kind in Europe, producing clean and reliable baseload electricity.”
Partners in the consortium are Fluor Corporation, majority investor in NuScale and lead in FEED work, NuScale Power, the SMR technology developer, and RoPower Nuclear, the local Romanian partner.
This collaboration highlights substantial support from both Romanian and U.S. governments, showcasing a united effort in advancing clean energy solutions.
