This week marked a significant achievement in Romanian energy as E.ON Romania successfully integrated hydrogen into the gas network for the first time. The 20HyGrid pilot project demonstrated the feasibility of supplying homes with a blend of natural gas and hydrogen, paving the way for partial decarbonization of the heating sector.
The project’s findings, presented to the Ministry of Energy and ANRE, highlighted the compatibility of the existing gas distribution network with hydrogen integration. With lower concentrations of polluting gases, the mixture shows promise for Romania’s energy landscape.
President of ANRE, George Niculescu, emphasized the importance of projects like 20HyGrid in shaping regulatory frameworks. Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, highlighted efforts to facilitate investments in green hydrogen.
Looking ahead, Delgaz Grid plans to embark on additional pilot projects to contribute to the legislative framework. CEO of E.ON Romania, Volker Raffel, stressed the role of natural gas distribution networks in transporting green gas, urging collaborative action to leverage Romania’s potential as a regional hydrogen hub.
